In April (Autism Awareness Month) national and local organizations hold a variety of events and educational activities to help spread awareness about autism spectrum disorder (ASD). According to the March 2023 CDC study, autism affects an estimated 1 out of 36 8-year old’s in the United States. Autism rates have effectively tripled in the last 16 years according to the CDC and sit in stark contrast to the 1 in 150 rate, we saw in 2000.
Why the increase you may ask? Many reasons, but the one I want to focus on is awareness. With awareness comes knowledge and the ability to recognize ASD earlier in our children which empowers us to provide the resources they need. It’s not about a cure (although that would be great!) but providing ASD kids with the tools they need to flourish and be the best versions of themselves.
First, some facts about ASD:
ASD refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. All three must be present for a diagnosis of ASD.
It is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. Some people with ASD have a known difference, such as a genetic condition. Other causes are not yet known. Scientists believe there are multiple causes of ASD altering brain development. We still have much to learn about these causes and how they impact people with ASD.
No cure exists and there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. The goal of treatment is to maximize your child's ability to function by reducing autism spectrum disorder symptoms and supporting learning and development.
So, what do I want the world to be “aware” of this April? Just some simple and straight forward thoughts from us here at Raising Addy…
Be kind. Kindness goes a long way as many don’t understand what it took just to get out the door and into the world.
Don’t stare or judge. I notice and they notice. We have feelings just like you do.
I get it. Please don’t tell us you get it unless you are raising a special needs child.
Accept us. If we can accept each other’s differences, without judgement, we will all be happier.
Finding peace. We are all in this world together, so let’s try and make it more peaceful by being kind and not judging each other.
From all of us here at Raising Addy, Happy Autism Awareness Month!
Much love,
Raising Addy
